A personal liability umbrella is an insurance policy that’s written to provide an additional layer of liability insurance that goes over the top of a liability insurance on your auto, your homeowners policy, or for example your boat. So in the event that you were involved in a large lawsuit and the underlying coverages were exhausted, the liability umbrella would go on top of that. And the umbrella policy is actually pretty broad in that it also gives you protection in the event you don’t have an underlying policy below the umbrella. So in broad terms that is what a personal liability umbrella is.
